Mars Attacks! They did attack, that is. They did it when Fry was frozen and Leela was not yet alive. Remember how this all started? Here's a the first episode demonstrating how this epic story began, for those not in the know.
You see that counter? 1000 years. During this time, society collapsed, was rebuilt, regressed into the dark ages, advanced again, got broken down yet again, and rebuilt yet again. We can gather from different episodes that some of the events that occurred while Fry was frozen were actually Fry traveling back to the past once he had reached the future. This is important to note, because this is the axis of the entire Futurama story, and the key to proving that Fry and Leela are related. In fact, the topic of Fry's family tree has been discussed and covered by other websites in the past. Our friends at theinfosphere.org have this wonderful illustration:
Look closely, and you'll see what appears to be a perfectly reasonable depiction of the connections involved in Futurama. This is what has been gathered from the impressions that the episodes have given us, the viewers and fans of this awesome show. You'll even see Leela is connected to Fry, as their ongoing attempted romance in the series would suggest, but this illustration is not entirely correct. It gets some things right, but completely misses what is said implicitly, between the lines.

it all started with four little words...
Futurama: The Complete Collection
Haha! No, not really. That was just a clever way of opening. Really, though, don't go anywhere...if you haven't seen Futurama in it's entirety you should definitely pick up the set. Without this at your disposal, you won't know what we're talking about here. I suppose it's possible to know all about Futurama if you've seen a lot of the re-runs, so I guess you don't need to buy the DVD Box Set from amazon.com anyway...but you know you want it ;)
