Do you think Fry and Leela are related?

Fry and Leela are related.

Mars Attacks! They did attack, that is. They did it when Fry was frozen and Leela was not yet alive. Remember how this all started? Here's a the first episode demonstrating how this epic story began, for those not in the know.

You see that counter? 1000 years. During this time, society collapsed, was rebuilt, regressed into the dark ages, advanced again, got broken down yet again, and rebuilt yet again. We can gather from different episodes that some of the events that occurred while Fry was frozen were actually Fry traveling back to the past once he had reached the future. This is important to note, because this is the axis of the entire Futurama story, and the key to proving that Fry and Leela are related. In fact, the topic of Fry's family tree has been discussed and covered by other websites in the past. Our friends at theinfosphere.org have this wonderful illustration:

Look closely, and you'll see what appears to be a perfectly reasonable depiction of the connections involved in Futurama. This is what has been gathered from the impressions that the episodes have given us, the viewers and fans of this awesome show. You'll even see Leela is connected to Fry, as their ongoing attempted romance in the series would suggest, but this illustration is not entirely correct. It gets some things right, but completely misses what is said implicitly, between the lines.

More after the jump...

So what's all this really getting at, you ask? Very good question. The facts we've gathered from things that have been explicitly stated in the series are straightforward enough. But what about the things that weren't handed to us on a silver platter? Where did Leela's parents, Turanga Morris and Munda come from? These two didn't even make an appearance at the beginning of the story - the series began with the premise that Leela was the sole survivor of an extinct alien race. We even saw one episode where they played on this theory in a profound way when a supposed-other-last-remaining-cyclops named Alkazar woos Leela and they almost get married. While this was a fun fantasy to explore toward the beginning of the series, the truth later came out that Leela is actually a mutant with Earthly origins in the episode titled "Leela's Homeworld".

This is vital, because it leads the origin of her genes to be somewhere on EARTH! This may not seem important, but on the cosmic scale, this makes literally a world of difference!

But how exactly did this happen? You'll have to come back when I come up with that part. In the mean-time, start with watching the first few seasons. They're super cheap now at amazon.com.

Thanks for reading. :)
